ERA REAL ESTATE AND NATIONAL TRUST HELP PROMOTE HISTORIC PROPERTIES IN NORTHERN NEW JERSEY

PARSIPPANY, NJ, January 3, 2002 - More than 45 sales associates from North Jersey-based Burgdorff ERA offices recently completed an educational program geared toward protecting historic properties and providing real estate professionals with knowledge to succeed in this niche market. The public-private educational program is offered through a partnership between the National Trust for Historic Preservation and ERA Franchise Systems LLC.

"The Historic Real Estate Program aim is two-fold," says P.J. Martin Smith, senior vice president of marketing, ERA Franchise Systems LLC. "It enables real estate sales associates to better serve the needs of buyers and sellers in this niche market while preserving history."

Open to all real estate professionals, regardless of company affiliation, the Historic Real Estate Program offers a comprehensive look at architectural styles from early Colonial through Art Deco. It also provides education on historic preservation legislation and ordinances, tax incentives and the requirements to include a property in the National Register of Historic Places.

After completing the one-day course, participants receive a six-month membership in the National Trust and a certificate of completion. ERA affiliates are permitted to use the National Trust logo on their promotional materials upon completion of the course.

Dwight Young, senior communications associate for the National Trust, conducts the course. Young, who has a Masters in Architectural History from the University of Virginia, has been working for the National Trust since 1977. Through speeches, newspapers, opinion pieces and other media outlets, Young educates people about the mission of the National Trust.

Dolores Croneberger of Burgdorff ERA in New Providence, NJ says Young's course helped her understand historic preservation and regulations. "As a result of the National Trust's class, I'm better equipped to help clients who are shopping for older homes," says the 18-year veteran of the real estate industry. "It helped to debunk a lot of myths about historic properties and educate me about regulations associated with these type of homes."

Like those real estate professionals who completed the training in North Jersey, ERA associates throughout the country are also benefiting as a result of the Historic Program. Lori Martin, a sales associate from ERA Key Realty Services in Whitinsville, (MA) recently completed the program.

"Protecting and preserving historic architecture is important, especially to real estate associates working in New England," Martin says. "The class really helped me to recognize different structures and the qualities that make them unique. When I share the information I learned with clients, they are impressed by my architectural knowledge."

ERA Real Estate and the National Trust offer the Historic Real Estate Program several times a year throughout the United States. The course fee is $139. Visit www.ERA.com/nationaltrust or call (973) 496-5628 for additional information.
