The Charter Township of Comstock is a community of thirty-five (35) square miles in northeastern Kalamazoo County, which is located in the southwestern region of Michigan. Comstock Township, east of the City of Kalamazoo, is served by highways I-94 and M-96, both bisecting the Township from east to west and running virtually parallel to each other separated by a distance of slightly more than one mile. Economic growth has been fast-paced with a heavy concentration in auto stamping and parts, plastics, specialty and industrial machine shops, and service-oriented businesses. Our many greenhouses have made Comstock Township the Bedding Plant Capital of the World. Our many lakes and streams provide excellent fishing and recreational activities. Comstock Township is a charter township in Kalamazoo County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 13,851 at the 2000 census. [edit] GeographyAccording to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 34.9 square miles (90.5 km²), of which, 33.0 square miles (85.4km²) of it is land and 2.0 square miles (5.1km²) of it (5.67%) is water. [edit] DemographicsA densely populated portion of the township adjacent to the city of Kalamazoo is part of the census-designated place (CDP), Comstock Northwest, Michigan. As of the census2 of 2000, there were 13,851 people, 5,366 households, and 3,809 families residing in the township. The population density was 420.2 per square mile (162.3/km²). There were 5,601 housing units at an average density of 169.9/sqmi (65.6/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 91.98% White, 4.01% African American, 0.43% Native American, 1.16% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.70% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.67% of the population. There were 5,366 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. 23.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.04. In the township the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. The median income for a household in the township was $46,140, and the median income for a family was $54,866. Males had a median income of $40,845 versus $29,195 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,857. About 6.0% of families and 7.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.6% of those under age 18 and 4.6% of those age 65 or over.
